Complementary events, the return of dance to the Sferisterio, the contemporanea and three thematic parties on stage
From 20 July to the 12 august

A festival programme that, alongside the three opera masterpieces Il flauto magico, L’Elisir d’amore, and La traviata, and the traditional Night of the Opera, includes complementary events, the return of dance to the Sferisterio, the contemporanea and three thematic parties on stage

Vinicio Capossela, Francesco Micheli with Elio, Max Gazzè, Lella Costa, and Eleonora Abbagnato: these are the stars that will feature in the three operas to be performed from 20 July to 12 August 2018, in Macerata

The 2018 programme for the Macerata Opera Festival, whose main theme is #verdesperanza, has been officially announced. Planned by General Manager Luciano Messi, Artistic Director Barbara Minghetti, and Music Director Francesco Lanzillotta, the 2018 programme is a blend of tradition and innovation. While following the same weekly thematic schedule, it is characterised by new leading figures and ideas. The result is a truly international festival, which also aims to strengthen ties with the local communities, thanks to a wide range of activities throughout the year, such as school visits, which started a few months ago, introductory lectures, and further events that will take place in the coming months, making Macerata “a festive city for its Festival”.

At the Sferisterio

Night of the Opera

For this special night the whole city dresses up in green. The music of the composers of the Macerata Opera Festival’s current season will resound in the streets.

After the successful premiere of “Shi. To Be” in 2017, the 2018 programme will also showcase a premiere (Lauro Rossi Theatre, Wednesday 25 July, 1 and 8 August): the winning opera of the international competition, Macerata 4.0 – in collaboration with Opera Europe, IED and the New Music Festivals – which is dedicated to projects of contemporary musical theatre (opera, musical theatre show, installation, performance, audiovisual projects, dance videtart…) made by artistic teams and associations whom members are younger than 35 on 1st January 2018. The projects we received, inspired by #verdesperanza (the theme of Macerata Opera Festival 2018), were analysed by an international jury. The winner was proclaimed on Saturday 7th April: We Can Be Waves by Casa Marziano.

Parties on stage

On the closing days of the festival, the last weekend before mid-August, the end-of-season opera performances will not mean the closure of the theatre: 200 people will have the opportunity to spend a few more hours at the Sferisterio, right on stage, and to participate in three special “themed parties”.
