From 16 July to 8 August 2027, three masterpieces of the operatic repertoire come to life once again in the unique setting of the Sferisterio in Macerata, bringing together new productions, outstanding performances and iconic stagings that have shaped the Festival’s history.
Now in its 63rd edition, the Macerata Opera Festival 2027 celebrates the timeless power of opera and its ability to reinvent itself through the vision of internationally renowned stage directors, conductors and performers.
Three great operas make up the programme: Tosca by Giacomo Puccini, in a new co-production with the Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini, directed by Tomer Zvulun and conducted by Ramón Tebar; L’elisir d’amore by Gaetano Donizetti, in Damiano Michieletto’s lively and colourful production, conducted by Corrado Rovaris; and La traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, marking the return of the legendary Traviata degli specchi (La traviata of the Mirrors) by Henning Brockhaus and Josef Svoboda, conducted by Lü Jia.
From a fresh interpretation of a Puccini masterpiece to contemporary theatrical storytelling, and the return of a production first created at the Sferisterio that has since gained worldwide acclaim, the Festival presents opera as an art form that transcends eras, perspectives and generations.
At the heart of it all stands the Sferisterio in Macerata, with its monumental architecture, exceptional acoustics and unique relationship between stage and audience. A place where the great operatic tradition meets artistic innovation, offering a distinctive cultural experience on the international stage every summer.
