Tosca

Opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini, libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica
New co-production by Macerata Opera Festival and Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini
One of Puccini’s most popular works – and indeed one of the most popular in the entire operatic repertoire – it tells the story of the famous singer Tosca and her tragic love affair with the painter Cavaradossi, set against a backdrop of abuse of power, aspirations for freedom, violence and, ultimately, death. Set in 1800 in Rome during the Restoration following the collapse of the brief republican experiment, Tosca not only features some of Puccini’s most celebrated arias, but continues to resonate with contemporary audiences by tackling themes that remain relevant today, starting with the powerful female figure of the protagonist. The new production will be directed by Tomer Zvulum, known for his cinematic approach to opera, and conducted by Ramón Tebar, one of the most interesting conductors of his generation.
