L'Elisir d'Amore

Opera in two acts by Gaetano Donizetti, libretto by Felice Romani
A truly playful melodrama, L’Elisir d’Amore tells the fresh and innocent story of the shy peasant Nemorino, who is hopelessly in love with the capricious landowner Adina. Having first placed his trust in a miraculous yet fake love potion from the charlatan Doctor Dulcamara, Nemorino will ultimately prevent Adina from marrying the vain soldier Belcore—thanks instead to the young woman’s natural jealousy. Donizetti’s masterpiece will be presented in the highly successful co-production with the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia and the Teatro Real in Madrid, directed by Damiano Michieletto in 2018. Fresh, summery, seaside-inspired, and incredibly colorful, it has since enjoyed continuous success and acclaim both in indoor performances and in the open-air version prepared specifically for the Sferisterio. The musical direction is by Corrado Rovaris, music director of the Philadelphia Opera Company since 2005 and a regular guest at the finest international opera festivals.
