Il trovatore

Lyric drama in four parts by Salvatore Cammarano. First performance: Rome, Teatro Apollo, 19 January 1853. Musical edition: E. F. Kalmus & Co., New York
IL TROVATORE
Set in fifteenth-century Spain, it tells the story of the tragic rivalry between the Count di Luna and the Troubadour Manrico for the love of the court lady Leonora, while the old gypsy Azucena, Manrico’s adoptive mother, hides the tragic secret that makes this struggle, full of twists, battles and surprises, even more cruel: Manrico is in fact the Count’s son. The opera ends with the death of the two young lovers and the anguish of the Count di Luna and Azucena.
With the revival of Mexican director Francisco Negrin’s successful production and Dmitri Jurowski’s conducting, the title that opened Verdi’s Popular Trilogy returns, while the cast brings together voices of great interest, such as the famous Italian tenor Piero Pretti in the role of the protagonist Manrico, the refined baritone Franco Vassallo as Count di Luna, the soprano Marta Torbidoni from the Marche region as Leonora, and the young Sofia Petrovich as Azucena, an artist who has been steadily growing since her significant debuts at the Opéra de Paris.
