A new addition to the festival is a series of symphonic concerts conducted by some of the foremost conductors of our time and celebrating in particular Beethoven\u2019s music.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>The Sferisterio wall will be a big screen for a selection of films featuring Charlie Chaplin, the Italian diva Lyda Borelli, and live soundtracks<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>The new Musical Director, <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>Donato<\/i><\/span><i> <\/i><span class=\"s1\"><i>Renzetti,<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i> will also lead a course for young artists<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Opera, cinema, and symphonic repertoire: this is <\/span><span class=\"s3\">the fulcrum around which the 2022 programme <\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u2013 which has been recently <\/span><span class=\"s3\">announced by the new Artistic Director <b>Paolo Pinamonti<\/b> and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Superintendent <b>Luciano Messi<\/b> \u2013<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> turns. Macerata Opera Festival 2022 will run from 19 July to 21 August: twenty-two live performances <\/span><span class=\"s1\">at the Sferisterio Arena and two <\/span><span class=\"s3\">performances<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> at Teatro<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Lauro<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Rossi will <\/span><span class=\"s3\">bring audiences back under the stars, with Beethoven\u2019s three symphonies and five piano concertos, Puccini\u2019s <i>Tosca<\/i>, Rossini\u2019s<\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><i>Il barbiere di Siviglia<\/i>, and three milestones of 20th century theatre and cinema (<i>Pagliacci<\/i> by Leoncavallo, <i>Rapsodia Satanica<\/i> by Mascagni, and <i>The Circus<\/i> by Chaplin). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">A special addition to the festival is a series of symphonic concerts conducted by internationally renowned conductors. The festival will open with the performance of Beethoven\u2019s Symphony No 9, with the <b>Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra and Chorus <\/b>and conductor <b>Zubin Mehta <\/b>(19 July); then, the <b>Orchestra of the Academy of Santa Cecilia<\/b> conducted by <b>Myung-Whun Chung<\/b> will perform Beethoven\u2019s Symphony No 6 <\/span><span class=\"s5\"> (<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u201cPastoral\u201d)<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">and No 9 (21<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">July);<\/span><span class=\"s7\"> Beethoven\u2019s piano concertos will be performed by award winning pianist <b>Jan Lisiecki<\/b>, whose brilliant career has taken him to concert halls and festivals all over the world<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">(4<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">and<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">6<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">August);<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> finally, <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>Antonio Florio <\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\">will conduct the <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>Cappella<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Neapolitana<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\"> in a new realisation of <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Mozart and Giuseppe<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Giordani\u2019s <i>Litaniae Lauretanae<\/i>, dedicated to the Marche region (18 August, Teatro Lauro Rossi).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">The new Musical Director<b> Donato<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Renzetti<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s8\"> will be on the podium for the premiere of the opera <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>Tosca <\/i>by Giacomo Puccini (performances on Friday 22 and Sunday 24 July; Friday 29 and Sunday 31 July). Renzetti will also conduct the <b>Filarmonica Gioachino Rossini <\/b>in a concert celebrating John<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Williams, the film composer known especially for his <i>Star Wars<\/i> soundtrack, and will lead an <b>international course for young conductors and young singers<\/b> to be held in Macerata from 4 to 11 August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">The red thread of Macerata Opera Festival 2022 is the world of cinema. <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>Valentina Carrasco<\/b>, director of <em>Tosca<\/em>, plays on the idea of a 1950s film set, designed by Samal Blak; costume design by Silvia Aymonino and lighting by Peter<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">van<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Praet. Cast includes<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Carmen<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Giannattasio<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">(Floria<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Tosca),<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Antonio Poli<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">(Mario<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Cavaradossi)<\/span><span class=\"s8\">, and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Claudio<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Sgura<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">(Scarpia).<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">On the podium:<b> Donato Renzetti.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">The second title (Friday 5,<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Sunday 7, and<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> Thursday <\/span><span class=\"s1\">11<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">August) is a new production of Ruggero Leoncavallo\u2019s <em>Pagliacci<\/em> by <b>Alessandro<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Talevi<\/b>, which was first staged at the Sferisterio arena in 2015; set design by Madeleine<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Boy, costume design by Manuel Pedretti,<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">and lighting by Marco Giusti. The opera will be preceded by the screening of one of Chaplin\u2019s finest works, <i>The<\/i><\/span><i> <\/i><span class=\"s1\"><i>Circus<\/i>, in its version restored by Cineteca di Bologna and with the first live performance of its soundtrack since 1928, thanks to the work of <b>Timothy Brock<\/b>, an international expert of score and film restorations. Brock will conduct the orchestra and cast of <i>Pagliacci<\/i>, featuring Rebeka Lokar (Nedda), Fabio Sartori (Caino),<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">George<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Petean (Tonio)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">The third title is <i>Il barbiere di Siviglia<\/i>, a comic masterpiece by the most famous and celebrated composer from the Marche region, Gioachino Rossini. It will be staged at the Sferisterio arena, after many years of absence, on Friday 12 August (then on Sunday 14, Friday 19, and Sunday 21 August). This new production, entrusted to <b>Daniele Menghini <\/b>(set design by Davide Signorini, costume design by Nika Campisi, and lighting by Simone de Angelis), was chosen through an international competition for direction, scenes and costumes reserved for artists who are under 35, in collaboration with Opera Europa and Rossini Opera Festival (participants presented their project in 2020). On the podium: the young and talented <b>Alessandro Bonato<\/b> will conduct the <strong>FORM &#8211;<\/strong> <b>Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana<\/b> (the festival orchestra). The cast of this new production of <i>Barbiere di Siviglia<\/i> set in a fictional world \u2013 a television studio or a production house for TV formats for the general public, \u2018a factory of fiction\u2019 \u2013 includes Ruzil Gatin (Count of Almaviva),<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Roberto De Candia (Bartolo), Serena Malfi (Rosina), Alessandro Luongo (Figaro), and Andrea<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Concetti<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">(Basilio).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">As always, the <b>Coro Lirico Marchigiano \u201cVincenzo Bellini\u201d<\/b>, directed by Martino Faggiani, will be the official chorus of the festival while the <b>Pueri Cantores \u201cD. Zamberletti\u201d<\/b> chorus, directed by Gianluca Paolucci, will perform in <i>Tosca<\/i> and <i>Pagliacci<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\">These opera productions are complemented by a concert celebrating Mascagni (Saturday 23 July), who composed the soundtrack for the film <b><i>Rapsodia<\/i><\/b><\/span><b><i> <\/i><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>satanica <\/i><\/b>(1971), a masterpiece of silent Italian cinema based on Goethe\u2019s <i>Faust<\/i>, directed by Nino Oxilia. The film is also a prime example of the diva genre, featuring Lyda Borelli as Alba d\u2019Oltrevita. On the podium: director and composer <b>Marcello Panni <\/b>\u2013 who worked on Mascagni\u2019s score \u2013 will conduct the FORM &#8211; Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana. This concert will also feature three interludes from Mascagni\u2019s <i>Guglielmo Ratcliff<\/i>, <i>Cavalleria rusticana<\/i>, and <i>Amica<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\">Arena Sferisterio will also host a concert celebrating Brazilian music with one of Brazil\u2019s most iconic guitarists, <b>Toquinho<\/b>, who will perform with his band over 50 years of hits on Saturday, 13 August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p11\"><span class=\"s1\">Ticket sales will open on 22<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">March.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tosca, Il barbiere di Siviglia, and Pagliacci are the three opera titles chosen by the new Artistic Director, Paolo Pinamonti.
