With Tosca, Puccini and his two trusted librettists, Illica and Giacosa, ‘entered’ the 20th century. In the opera, a tragic triangle of love, power, and freedom acts as a driving force: in the end, fate destroys all of the protagonists, both positive and negative, just after the tenor has finished the famous aria “E lucevan le stelle”. Under the sky of the open-air arena – where the show will return for the first time since 2014 – the setting will heighten the expressive power of this aria.
